Free Spirit Dancer

So often we forget to invest in the things that we love… the things that bring us joy and give us purpose. Not because these things define us as whole, but because we couldn’t picture our lives without them. I dance because nothing else compares.” Kamille King

Kamille King knows she has been put on this earth to not just dance but to create and explore. She is one of the most creative souls I have ever met. As a Newark Public School dance educator, she is responsible for bringing dance to hundreds of children on a daily basis. Her journey into dance started the same way many of her student’s journey started.

Maybe it was divine intervention, maybe it was fate but Kamille didn’t intend to sign up for dance in the 6th grade. When she found herself in dance class for the first time at Cicely L. Tyson Community School of Performing and Fine Arts in East Orange, she began to evolve. She entered the 6th grade, a shy and timid girl. Her first dance teacher, Clarissa Newby Phillips, pushed her because she saw something special in her. She credits dance with teaching her to be limitless and take risks – character traits I think we could all benefit from. Once she embraced her call to dance she invested in herself.

She has evolved into a crafter, fusing various styles of dance to create timeless pieces. 2016 Kamille was awarded the emerging choreographers award from NJPAC. She created a 14-minute piece titled WAITING IN LEFTOVERS about the process of waiting. Aside from Newark Public Schools, Kamille also directs the Montclair High School Dance Company. She dances with Umoja dance Company and is the assistant director of their youth group Usaama.

Although she didn’t start dancing until the 6th grade, today Kamille can’t imagine her life without dance. “Dance taught me to express myself in front of other people. I love being in tune with my body as a black woman. As a dancer I have found a way of walking in my own skin that makes me proud.” Kamille has created a platform for herself to explore in ways you would never have thought of. She creates movement that connects you to raw emotions. When you experience her work, you can feel a release, a sense of letting go. Kamille King is an artist, an advocate for the arts, a mover and a free spirit who speaks her heart through dance.
