My name is Mireicy Aquino, I am 8 years old and I’ve been dancing since I was 2 years old (at least that what my mom tells me.) My first time dancing was at First Ave School. Mrs. Jackson, my principal noticed me in the lobby dancing while waiting for my mom. She invited me to dance on stage. Very happy I ran on stage without a care about who was watching, I started to dance, “I was here”. I’ve been dancing for as long as I can remember.
I dance when I am sad, when I’m happy, when I worship and when I try to say something that I can’t express through words. Sometimes I feel I am firebird, I soar through the air. I like to dress up with my friends, and I love to perform. I am very curious, I write and recite poetry. I love and care for people, especially ones in need. When I grow up I want to be an advocate for equal rights.
My family enjoys music and dance at parties like at family gatherings, but they don’t dance like me. I dance because God blessed me with a body and passion to tell stories through movements. Every Saturday I get to go into the studio with little dancers at Sharron Miller Academy. It is amazing to see their smile while they follow my steps, it’s the greatest joy of all. I want to inspire my generation to dance, just like my teachers inspire me.
My first dance teacher, Susan Gaddy Pope, who is my biggest inspiration taught me how important it is to count and feel the music. Because of her, I love dance so much, and I want to spread the love for dance to my generation. She always says, "Mireicy give me 8 counts". It is my heartbeat, my soul, my story all in 8 counts. Dance is discipline, you have to work hard and love what you do. Dance taught me to value time. Every minute counts.
I love all dance styles, I find myself in all of them, but the ones closest to my heart are Ballet, Tap and Contemporary.
I dance because there is nothing else in the world that makes me feel more alive than dance. Dance makes me believe in myself and gives me confidence that I can be everything I want to be. Most of all, I can make a difference not only in my life, but to others just by sharing the magic of dance.
I dance because…
