Elder Stories
According to the African proverb, "When an old man dies, a library burns down." Elder’s Stories: Portraits of Resistance, Resiliency, and Respect - an intergenerational, multimodal presentation of Newark elders' lived experiences and lessons learned. This project aims to prepare students of color for the future by sharing stories and lessons learned. In communities of color, elders are respected and seen as cultural knowledge holders. as they pass down generational knowledge and wisdom. They hold familial and cultural histories. Their stories are experiential and represent their lived experiences. The elders in this project are members of NJPAC’s Elders Council – a group of prominent Black elders who are respected in their field and nominated and voted into the council.
